Walberton Nursery trials recycling through TerraCycle
In June 2021 Walberton Nursery started a trial to recycle crisp and biscuit packets, and pens through TerraCycle. TerraCycle’s aim is to recycle the “non-recyclable” by channeling hard to recycle items through specialist routes, diverting it from landfills and turning it into something useful. Crisp packets and pens for example, are separated into their component materials and turned into other forms of plastic to make new recycled products.
All Tristram Plants nurseries already recycle many streams of production-related waste (more on this on our Environment page), in line with LEAF principles and the sustainability aspects of our OHAS certification. But we always strive to do more where possible, so Walberton thought to encourage staff to recycle their crisp packets and used pens. In the first 3 months nearly 1/2 a kilo of crisp packets were taken to a local collection point…that may not sound much but it equates to around 240 crisp packets not going to landfill!
